no Music no Life

the song im going to introduce today is "Need you Now'' by Lady Antebellum.

this song gives me lotta memories. is not because of the lyrics though. haha...it is because it was one of the songs i had to perform last time for my vocal test. my vocal teacher suggested me and a girl to sing it for the test. at 1st, i couldnt get the male's melody. after listening it for many times and with my partner's help, i managed to find its notes!!! i was so happy and we could start practising and duet together. of course one of the reasons i love this song is also because of its lyrics. but im not going to discuss bout its lyrics here...hehe...hope u guys can find it out and feel the lyrics with your heart. :)

Science in your daily life

Most of us uses battery everyday. for example, our clock and television's remote controller. but have you ever wonder how a battery works?

Chemical cells can be divided in to two main types, namely primary cells and secondary cells.
Primary cells are not rechargeable and can be used only once. They have to be disposed off once they are exhausted or fully discharged. Examples of primary cells are dry cells, alkaline cells and mercury cells. Secondary cells are rechargeable when they are exhausted and can be used again and again. Secondary cells can be recharged by passing an electric current through them in the opposite direction to the current flow during discharged or used. Examples of secondary cells include lead-acid accumulator, nickel-cadmium cell and lithium-ion cells.

A dry cell consists of a carbon rod(cathode) and a metal container made of zinc(anode). The electrolyte is ammonium chloride in the from of a paste. The carbon rod is surrounded by a mixture of carbon powder and manganese (iv) oxide, which is again surrounded by ammonium and zinc chloride paste. Carbon powder is a good electric conductor and it reduces the resistance in the cell. Carbon in powder form also increases the surface area of the carbon electrode.

When the dry cell is in use, the zinc metal releases electrons and is ionised to form Zn2+ ions. Thus, zinc acts as the reducing agent. At the anode:
Zn(s) --> Zn2+(aq) + 2e-

Electrons flow from the zinc metal container through the external circuit to the carbon rod where NH4+ ions receive electrons to produce ammonia gas and hydrogen gas. Thus, ammonium ions act as the oxidising agent. At the cathode:
2NH4+(aq)+ 2e- --> 2NH3(aq)+ H2(g)
The hydrogen produced surrounds the carbon rod and acts as an insulator, reducing the effiency of the cell. This effect is called polarization. The function of manganese(iv) oxide, MnO2 is to reduce cell polarisation. Manganese(iv) oxide oxidises the hydrogen gas and minimises the formation of gas bubbles at the carbon rod when the cell is in use.
2MnO2 + H2 --> MnO3 + H2O

Therefore, the overall reaction is:
Anode(-) : Zn(s) --> Zn2+(aq) + 2e-
Cathode(+) : 2NH4+(aq)+ 2e- --> 2NH3(aq)+ H2(g)
Overall : Zn(s) + 2NH4+(aq) --> Zn2+(aq) + 2NH3(aq)+ H2(g)

When the cell produces electric current, zinc metal dissolves. When the zinc metal container is perforated and the electrolyte leaks out, the dry cell cannot be used anymore.

Happy Wesak Day!!!

it is holiday again!!!! woohoo!!!! i love it!!! haha!!!

again what to do today??? oh my god im sure everywhere will be damn crowded as today is a public holiday. everyone will be going out to hang out!!! and of course im one of them!!! haha!!! after planning for some time, we decided to hit to Malacca!!! what a random idea huh!!! although i have been to malacca, im going again to have some nice food and spend my time at jonker street.

we reached there quite late at around 3:30pm. 1st thing to do is nothing other than eat!!!! i was freaking hungry as my usual lunch time is at 1pm!!! we decided to have chicken rice balls!!!
we ordered 6 chicken rice balls, 4 yam rice balls, a plate of bbq pork, half side of chicken and there was a plate of vegetable actually but not in the photo. hehe....sorry to vege...

at last we couldnt finish the chicken....haha...the portion we ordered was too much for us.

after that we went to jonker street. didnt buy anything. just walk in those shops and see..the weather was damn hot. then my friend suggested to get a cold drink from sam suk gong. it was so refreshing. my thirst gone away immediately after drinking the whole bottle of it. i like it! it is a good and healthy refreshing drink.

we reached home at around 1210am..damn tired but still i insist to post up something about the random trip before i go and have a nice shower!!!! finally the post is done!!! im going to take my shower now!!!

Om nom nom nom~~~ makan makan makan

if you are an oyster lover, here it is!!!!

this is the oyster mee sua.

originally from taiwan as well...

and yeah...i got it from the gardens...

mee sua is a type of noodle like spagetti but it is softer and thinner. it is savoury in taste added with some dark vinegar. mmmm....im drooling now....haha...

as u can see there are 6 oyster in my bowl...yummy!!! 6 oysters!!!! good for men!!! haha!!!! actually each bowl has only 3 oysters. but my friend does not like to eat it. so im the lucky one!!!! i got extra 3!!!! mmm....

this is actually the 1st time i had oyster mee sua. although it is not the genuine one like what you get from taiwan, i will still get back and enjoy it. because i love eating oysters!!!! haha

WooHoo!! class canceled!!!

supposed to have Huaman Disease class today at 12:30pm to 2:00pm. but last week lecturer told us that the class will be canceled!!! what a great news to all of us!!! because it is the only lecture on monday and hence we are all free today!!!! so what to do since i'm free?? hmmppp.... basically nothing much to do...as KL is not really an exciting city for me...haha...anyway... i went to midvalley with a friend to hang out. just window shopping( becuase no money... )...makan makan...and minum minum....

talking about minum...nowadays there is a new beverage( hmmpp...actually is not a new beverage but different with others) quite famous in KL.

yeah, Chatime is the name..

it is at the gardens....

Chatime sells milk teas. the gardens branch is its new branch. they also have other outlets at ss2 mall, ss15 and pavilion.

what is so unique about chatime's milk tea compared with other's milk teas??

the ordinary milk teas we used to get from some chinese stalls or restaurant are made of flavouring powder which are artificial. they just use the powder and add some sugar solution and that's it although they have plenty of flavours available.
However, chatime uses milk and tea to make their milk tea. hence, their products taste more genuine like the milk tea originally from taiwan. they also have variety of flavors. The variety of flavours and colours keeps me constantly coming back for more as I challenge my taste buds with flavours like peach,lychee, passion fruit,mint, chocolate, grape fruit, mango, yakult milk teas.

i had their pearl mik tea. it was excellent. basically this is the original flavor of genuine milk tea. it is made up just milk, tea, sugar solutions and the pearl jelly. it dont have additional flavorings.

as you can see the bottle is sealed. dont get misunderstood that it is made readily and sell to consumers when they want.

all their products are actually made freshly and after that they seal the bottle. how great is the technology nowadays. make consumers so convenient as we do not have to worry of spilling it out while walking. i just love chatime!!! and will get back and try other flavors for sure!!

Beauty

Last Saturday, the International beauty Exhibition was held at Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre(KLCC). And of course I was there!!! Woohoo!!! There were many cosmetics' brands opening their booths. Most of them are from overseas like Taiwan, Korea and Japan. Throughout the whole beauty exhibition, the most worthy product is their mask!!!! WHY??? because it is only RM 1 for each mask!!!! now, u will think. huh??!! 1 ringgit mask....?? so ''cheap''.... will my face be corroded after applying it??? but who knows...?? facial product is alway never try never know. Indeed I doubted the masks too. But GOD bless.....they are freaking very very superb nice!!! i bought the charcoal mask which is for deep cleansing. one more is for men. this is to minimize the pores as men tend to have more opened pores. another one is the whitening eye patch!!!!

As I always sleep late because of assignments... quiz...exams... so my eyes are turning into panda's eyes which have dark circles. p/s using assignments, quiz and exams as excuse. haha....

I applied this eye mask at night before I sleep. and guess what?? on the next morning i found my dark circles were not that dark!!!! i was like oh my god!!! finally my dark circles got to be cured!!!! I love it man!!! anyway i just bought 9 pairs of them...i should have bought more!!!! because im going to stay til late night everyday....hahahaha....

Naughty but Cute

they are Elliot and Bowie!!!
although they were too young for what they did, i think they did it with a true love, naive and innocent mind.

his expression was so adorable at 0:53.haha...he felt so proud of himself.

Science of the Day --- Natural Rubber

A polymer is a large, long-chain molecule formed by joining together thousands of small m on o m er molecules. Polymer can be classified into two groups which are natural polymers and synthetic polymers. Nat ural rubber is one of the example of natural polymers. The monomer unit of natural rubber is isoprene. Its IUPAC name is 2-methylbuta-1,3-diene.

An addition polymerization joins thousands of isoprene unit together to form poly(isoprene) or natural rubber.

The milky fluid obtained from tapped rubber trees is called latex. It consists of an aqueous suspension of colloidal rubber particles. Each rubber particle is made up of rubber polymers covered by a layer of protein membrane. Negative charges are found on the surface of the membrane, making each rubber particle negative charged. The negative-charged rubber particles repel each other, preventing themselves from combining and coagulating.

Acids such as methanoic acid(formic acid) are added to make the latex coagulate. Hydrogen ions from the acid neutralize the negative charges on the surface of the membrane. A neutral rubber particle is formed. When these neutral particles collide with each other, their outer membrane layers break up. The rubber polymers are set free.

The rubber polymers start to coagulate by combining together to form large lumps of rubber polymers which then precipitate out of the latex solution. Latex can still coagulate if acids are not added. Normally, the latex will coagulate if left overnight. Bacteria from the air slowly attack the protein on the membrane to produce lactic acid. Ionisation of the lactic acid produces hydrogen ions. The hydrogen ions neutralize the negative charges to form neutral rubber particles, allowing coagulation to occur. Alkalis such as solution are added to latex to prevent coagulation. The hydroxide ions from alkali neutralize hydrogen ions produced by lactic acid as a result of bacterial attack on protein. Because there are no hydrogen ions to neutralize the negative charges on the rubber particles, they remain negatively charged and hence cannot combine and coagulate.

Vulcanisation is a manufacturing process discovered by Charles Goodyear in 1839 to convert raw rubber into a tough useful product. In this year, about 1-3% by weight of sulphur is added to raw rubber and the mixture is carefully heated. Sulphur atoms form cross-links between adjacent chains of rubber polymers at the carbon-carbon double bonds. The number of sulphur atoms in the cross-links us usually one to four.

The cross-linking improve the properties of raw rubber, making vulcanized rubber

(a) a tougher material that is more resistant to oxidation.

(b) more elastic as the cross-linked chains can revert back to their original positions.

(c) more heat resistant which means the vulcanized rubber is less soft and sticky on warming.

(d) less soluble in organic solvent.
